"Hi Jays"

With Jack's blossoming vocabulary I have wondered why he won't refer to the baby by his name, James. My mom and I composed a list of the words that Jack knows. At 20 months my child has a vocabulary of just over 95 words and phrases. They range from "hi" to "Here you go, Mommy". He can say zebra, fox, Aubrey, and some form of Uncle Will (olie-olie-ull), but he refuses to say James. He won't even try. We do our best to explain...."Yes, Jack, that is a baby, but what is the baby's name?" Jack replies, "Baby." Hmmm....let's try something else. "Jack, can you give the paci to James?" Jack's response, "Here you go, Baby." Hopeless. Is it just a difficult name to say? No way, the child says Victoria, Zachary, Crockett, and Maggie....how hard is James?!? Is it his subconscious way of telling me that he rejects James' identity and refuses to accept him as his brother?!?!?!? Get a grip, Mommy. These are the thoughts that have been running through my mind....secretly tormenting me. "STOP CALLING HIM BABY, HIS NAME IS JAMES!!" Ahhh, don't we all feel better. Psycho. Anyway, you can imagine my surprise and delight this morning when I entered my room having previously gathered Jack out of his crib. We walked over to the bassinet to wish the baby good morning, and Jack says unprompted..."Hi Jays." I love it. He loves him. He accepts him. He wants him as his brother. This is how I felt.
